Meet The Acro Academy of WNY Owner

                       Sonya Charette-Bodo

Sonya Charette-Bodo has been dancing since the age of 2 years old, has over 25 years of of teaching experience in performing arts & fitness and has taught  in Maine, New Brunswick , Canada , and Western New York. Sonya was sought out by a gymnastics school , Baton school ,and pageants for coaching as well as  recruited by individuals to teach and choreograph as a young child in the St. John Valley, Maine. At the age of 12 years old, The Fort Kent Recreation Department contacted her  to develop and teach a dance curriculum for kids ages 2 years old through adults. She continued to direct and teach there until the age 18. She was the co - founder of The Fort Kent Warriors Dance Team her sophmore year of high school and was the co-captain, she later became the team captain . She coached and Choreographed for the Fort Kent Community high- school Dance Team- "The Warriors" for 13 years. Sonya was a former performing arts & fitness studio owner, the " Jazz IT Up Dance Studio" also known later as JIU Performing Arts & Fitness Studio in Fort Kent , Maine for 14 and 1/2  years. She taught ages 18 months to adults. She was the official 10th Mountain Dance Team coach and choreographer for the International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup in 2004, she was very active with the 10th Mountain lodge,in Fort Kent, Maine, where she was responsible to provide  entertainment and performances at events.She taught many different genres at Fort Kent Adult Education for many years. She taught dance at Patrick Theriault elementary School in Sinclair, Maine,  for 2 years. She  taught dance and fitness at Dr. Levesque School, in Frenchville, Maine for one season.  She was a dance/ gymnastic program developer /teacher/choreographer for the St. Francis Maine Recreation Department. She taught gymnastics at a public elementary school" Ecole Ernest Lang" in St. Francois N.B. Canada for two years. She was Eagle Lake Maine Youth Recreation Department Director, program developer, curriculum writer,  and lead  teacher for a year. She has experience as a talent, Pageant and modeling coach . She is an  award winning choreographer at many talent shows and competitions in the US & Canada and has also judged at scholarship and talent pageants  at different competitions internationally.

She was licensed to teach Zumba Fitness in 2008 and taught at her studio as well at the Fort Kent Elementary School ,and at Wisdom Highschool for the  St. Agatha Recreation Department. She was later licensed Zumba  Gold and  Aqua Zumba . She was hired to teach Aqua Zumba at Northern Aquatics in Eagle Lake, Maine.

 

She was certified in Bender Barre None at SCW Mania Conventions.In 2015/2016 she was National Dance week Foundation Ambassador.

 She is a guest teacher, she frequently travels to teach at  training workshops, judging and working with people of all ages and abilities. She also continues to study dance education with famous choreographers and educators as wellas attends dance seminars and workshops each year.

In 2014 she and her family moved to Buffalo New York due to her husbands career. Since then she has taught throughout Western New York at many different dance studios, organizations, gymnastics centers teaching many different styles & genres for both recreation and competition. She taughtas a gymnastic instructor, Ninja Warrior instructor, and party/ fitness instructor. She was  the dance specialist at The YMCA on Delaware Ave and Dance Specialist for the Summer Theatre Camp Located at Tapestry Charter School.

She holds a  certification in Acrobatic Arts AAC1, Stoney Creek, Ontario Canada, August 2017. 

She recently launched "SCB Moves" as a Certified Rhythm Works Integrative dance teacher who travels to organizations, businesses, clinics , homes, and  schools teaching adaptive dance to people with individual learning differences and special needs. To  better accommodate her clients/students she secured two locations one in Williamsville the other in Lockport, New York for both group classes and private lessons. 

Sonya is a Mother of two daughters Rylee who is now 18 and Raya who is 13 yeas old and Buster the Beagle who is 5. She has been married to her husband Jules Bodo for 11 years.

She has dedicated her life to being a performing arts and fitness advocate and inspiring others.

 She is proud that The Acro Academy of WNY is the  first Acro academy of its kind in Western New York. The Academy's mission is to provide safety first quality acrobatic training and is dedicated to excellence in acrodance  class. The Acro Academy of Western New York will provide a unique experience in which the student can grow both mentally and physically as an acro dancer with a positive growth mind set.

On May 26, 2019 The Acro Dance Academy website was launched and a location was secured for both summer 2019 and fall for season #1 in 2019/2020.
